Burton Ernie 6.3% Burton Ale

Fork Brewing's latest release is a handpull beer: Burton Ernie 6.3% Burton Ale, an old UK style, which Kelly brewed especially for some touring visitors from the United Kingdom and their supporters. (But don't worry, Kiwis - he used NZ ingredients!)  This beer was first brewed pre-Beervana in a small batch last year as Kelly wanted to have a crack at his interpretation of this historic style from the Burton-on-Trent region of England. "With a certain impending rugby tour looming, I thought it would be a good idea (well, with the help of Jenny from The Metro in the U.K., who...

Hopstock 2017: Cone’n The Bavarian 5% Schwarzbier/German Dark Lager

The hop harvest has been and gone, leaving nothing but fresh hop beers in its wake! Our Hopstock/fresh hop beer for 2017 is a German style with a Kiwi fresh hop treatment: Cone'n the Bavarian 5% Schwarzbier/German Dark Lager. Take a classic German Dark Lager, annoy the puritans by maturing it on 20kg of freshly picked Nelson Sauvin hop flowers and voilà! That's German, right?! Bordering on Cascadian Dark Ale (Black I.P.A.) in its aromatic profile, this decadent dark lager has subtle coffee, caramel and chocolate notes, a subdued and clean bitterness and buckets of pungent hopsmelliness (made-up compound word, just like the...

Zeus Juice 6.5% Mythological IPA

Gad Zeus! It's Fork Brewing's latest release, Zeus Juice 6.5% Mythological IPA! This beer was a special request from the higher powers (Fork & Brewer's shareholders), and is a slight change up from Kelly's usual take on an I.P.A. - a little more bitter than his usual hoppy numbers. "I could wax lyrical about the intent behind this beer," says Kelly. "But it was actually the higher powers - the actual god-like figures behind the illustrious Fork & Brewer - that had an idea for this brew. It was a simple quest: make an I.P.A. at around 6-6.5% but make it a...

Galactic Gose 4.5% Dry-Hopped Sour Wheat

A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away (well... Hamilton, actually), Kelly Ryan began making something a little different – a dry-hopped cider. This ended up being the inspiration (father?) of Galactic Gose 4.5% Dry-Hopped Sour Wheat. The original pomme-tastic drop went on to win Champion Cider of NZ 2013 and was liberally dry-hopped with a combination of NZ, US and Australian hops. "The Australian hop used back then was Galaxy, which was literally bursting with super-oily goodness, making the heavy aromatics of papaya and ripe pineapple perfect in a slightly tart cider," says Kelly.  "I actually...

Charlie 4.3% Extra Pale Ale

The latest Fork & Brewer release, Charlie XPA, is a sessionable pale ale, and simultaneously, a nod to one of Fork & Brewer's favourite regulars.  "Our Wellington sales rep, Neil Hickling, often pops into the pub with his wonderful pug, Charlie," says Kelly.  "For months, Neil had been asking when we would brew a pugalicious/pugnacious beer in honour of little Charlie. So I did! It's small in stature but full of personality - just like Charlie! Kelly wanted to brew something really pale with nice, fruity hops, a dry (as a bone??), clean finish with good sessionability. "XPA seemed the...

Little Forker: The Demogorgon 8.8% Specialty Imperial Stout

Ready for a #LittleForker that's gonna get a little freaky? The Demogorgon 8.8% Imperial Stout is packed full of chipotle, Dutch cocoa powder, smoked manuka and.... silkworm pupae? Stranger things have happened... A slightly unusual beer, this includes a popular Korean snack food called Beondegi. Beondagi are the pupae of the silkworm and are collected from the silk cocoons after boiling and harvesting of the thread. They are relatively high in protein (over 70%) and have an earthy, nutty, umami-like flavour. Kelly lived in South Korea for three years and really enjoyed buying a paper cup of these. They are usually served...

Cherry 2000 5% Cinnamon & Cherry Gose

Our latest Fork Brewing drop is the fun and fruity summer release, Cherry 2000 5% Cinnamon & Cherry Gose, a tart and fruity drop with a light, salty tang on the back palate, finishing with the faintest hint of cinnamon spice.  Kelly has been tinkering about with Goses as a style since early this year - in fact, 2016 was the first year he ever brewed a Gose. (If we're keeping on theme here, you could say 2016 is the year he popped his Gose cherry.)  The name of this Gose is an homage to the sexy sci-fi flick, Cherry 2000, starring...

Slip Pils 5.2% German Style Pilsner

Slip Pils is a 5.2% German Style Pilsner that tips its foamy white hat to consummate Californian brewery, Firestone Walker's Pivo Hoppy Pils. Fork Brewing brewer, Kelly Ryan, says there are some styles of beer that are, for him, the Holy Grail in terms of brewing and drinking. In particular, perfectly crafted Pilseners and Saisons. "In the past few years, I've managed to get to Denver and to Philadelphia as part of World Beer Cup judging," he says. "It's always great heading to the States and being inspired by some of their fantastic beers and breweries. Due to the huge...

Alternative 5.8% Germanic Pale Ale

Our first Fork Brewing release post the heady days of Beervana, sees the release of Alternative 5.8% Germanic Pale Ale, a closet hybrid beer style, which exclusively trials a brand new malt variety from Gladfield Malt. This Pale Ale is a bit of a hybrid, moonlighting between the North German/Dusseldorf-style Altbier (using fresh German hops) and a great English drinking beer called Extra Special Bitter (or ESB). Rich and malty without being oversweet, Alternative has wonderful fruit characteristics, bursting with citrus goodness. It also has the honour of trialling Gladfield Malt's new variety of malt (as yet unnamed, but identified...
