Bouq 6.5% West Coast American IPA

Bouq 6.5% West Coast American IPA is Fork Brewing's entry into the 9th Annual West IPA Challenge! Its name is short for "bouquet", and draws inspiration from the heart of what makes a great American IPA - the hop flowers themselves (consider it a cousin of last year's WCIPAC entry, The Flower Arranger). "Three varieties have been carefully blended to get the characters I want expressed in this beer. Mosaic with its wafts of passionfruit and raspberry, Citra for its orange and mango delights and Centennial for its grapefruit, floral and pine/wood elements," says Kelly.  "Golden Promise was chosen for...

9th Annual West Coast IPA Challenge expands to Fork & Brewer

Colin Mallon, Malthouse Operations Guy and West Coast IPA Challenge organiser, says this year's 9th Challenge will expand to Malthouse's sister bar, Fork & Brewer on Bond Street, due to increasingly large crowds turning up to see who will win the coveted Golden Gumboots.   The annual event, taking place on Friday, 29 July, sees brewers showcase their skills with hops by brewing West Coast IPAs, a notoriously popular and hoppy style of beer. "It's become such a big event on the calendar because of people's ongoing and increasingly growing love affair with different beers," Colin says. "The event has raised awareness of the...

Puns N’ Goses 3.7% German Sour Wheat

Be warned: many puns were harmed in the making of this beer. Puns N' Goses 3.7% German Sour Wheat - or a "Gose" to the initiated beer pundit - was the source of much word play, thanks to a new beer style for Kelly to brew, over-worked in-house punny heads, and a Facebook competition. "This particular beer was a fun one to make, not only because it was the first time I'd brewed it, but because we put naming rights out to the public and had a competition to name it. There were some pretty awesome, witty titles that cropped...

SOBA Winter Ale Fest: Kinot Noir 9.0% Imperial Dark Saison

When you get two brewers who are somewhat notorious for erring on the side of eccentric ingredients, you get conversations like the following that lead to SOBA Winter Ale Fest collabs and beers like Kinot Noir, an Imperial Dark Saison with Pinot Noir Grape Must and Kina Roe. Kerry [Gray of Choice Bros Brewery fame]: "Hey, Kelly, got a cool idea for a collaboration for Winter Ales. You keen?" Kelly: "Hey, bro! Your name is just like mine but has two Rs instead of two Ls!"Kerry: "What?"Kelly: "I'm hungry. Might get a feed of Kina."Kerry: "You're weird."Kelly: "Let's brew. What are...

Simcode 7% American Strong Pilsener

Simcoe is one of those hop varieties that's distinctly American. It throws off a complex aromatic profile that focuses on pine needles, the peel of preserved lemons and the faintest herbal, woody hint of a freshly cut conifer branch. Underneath that it can even hint at ripe mango skin and the faintest aroma of banana passionfruit. It is one of the hop megastars. With some fresh season hops in store, Kelly says it made sense for him to use these and let the variety shine in Simcode 7% American Strong Pilsener, released this Wednesday in a double launch at Fork &...

Little Forker: SuRoSa 7.6% Rosemary Saison

It's become a bit of a tradition that Fork Brewing hosts the winners of the Greater Wellington Brewday Homebrew competition, and brew a #LittleForker batch of the winning brew with Kelly to go on the Fork taps. Last year saw Miriam Sorensen's delicious Black Rabbit Porter pouring behind the bar, and this year we have a more unusual brew as the winner. SuRoSa (short for Summer Rosemary Saison) is the brain child of Matthew Gilbert and Rene Ebbesen, two super keen homebrewers who are well on their way to #brewninja enlightenment. Self-taught with a keen eye (and thirst) for the...

Champagne Supernova 7.1% Fresh Hopped Brett IPA

The only way to describe this beautiful collision of a fresh hop beer, brewed for Hopstock 2016, is "the Frankenstein of the Fork line up". With the final result displaying elements (in inspiration and creation) from green hops, champagne, Belgian Brett yeast characters, IPAs and then trying it all together in a very light malt base, using multiple grains, proves that Kelly Ryan has never before been more in mad scientist mode.  "It's a strange beer, I guess," says Kelly of this multi-faceted, hop-headed monster. "I was looking to brew something super pale, super clean, super crisp. Hopefully, something a...

Fork Brewing Judges at World Beer Cup

It's drawn both parallels to the Olympics and been accused of being a thinly disguised work jolly in the media, but the annual World Beer Cup is seriously intense stuff. This week, Kelly and Colin are judging at the 20th annual World Beer Cup taking place in Philadelphia, USA. It's Kelly's fourth time as a judge, and Colin's first. Kelly's even been on the other side of the judging table when he worked for Thornbridge Brewery in the UK, and their brewing team won a Silver in 2010. This Q&A with Colin and Kelly busts the myth that judging 80 beers...

Divine Brown 5.3% Mocha Brown Ale

Cosy up to a Divine Brown 5.3% Mocha Brown Ale as the temperature becomes increasingly ruthless, and bears down on your poor, wee, tropical Wellington summer-conditioned soul.  Think a seductive, dark coffee character with hints of hazelnut and plums, following through into a clean, biscuity mid-palate, and finishing light, slightly sweet and with delicate cacao/dark chocolate flavours, partnered with aromas of freshly ground coffee, fresh-cut grass, roasted hazelnuts and whipped vanilla cream. This Mocha Brown Ale is a moreish, Kelly Ryan reincarnation of Fork Brewing's former Divine Brown 5% Brown Ale, B.B. ('Before Brewjesus'); its name riffing upon a slightly...

Welterweight 5.5% English IPA

This brew is yet another reinterpretation of a beer from Fork's past under Dion Page and Lester Dunn. The original Welterweight was a Session Strength, malt-led IPA, almost a mini Base Isolator in a lot of ways. Kel wanted to reinvent this beer with a style that was missing from Fork's current tap line-up and thought an English IPA would be a great addition. The resultant beer is 5.5% alcohol, around 30 bitterness units and pours a beautiful orange-gold with a mousse-like white head. It has mid-palate weight and a nice orange-marmalade finish. "This is a style very dear to my heart. Throughout...
